Of all Dutch landscape painters Koekkoek is perhaps the most romantic. He specialized in stunning views over the valleys of the Rhine and woodland views with majestic trees, which at that time "Clem Oak" were called to the supreme god in the Germanic mythology. In 1834 he settled in the German Kleve, across the border at Nijmegen. He found the German landscape, with its hills and the river Rhine, romantic than the Dutch.
